Mary Jean Kane is a licensed clinical social worker. She works with individual adults and older adolescents, couples, family members, and groups, and leads a Relational Psychotherapy Group where men and women work on emotional awareness and understanding and enhance their confidence and ability to have healthy relationships. Mary Jean is a psychodynamic psychotherapist, which includes working on problems of everyday living and helping people understand and work through the impact of their family history on present day living. Mary Jean's style is warm and interactive, and she places an emphasis on developing an interactive relationship with her patients so that they can feel her presence, understanding and empathy as they do their work. Her areas of specialization are in contemporary relational psychotherapies, including self-psychology and intersubjectivity, and she uses imagery, Focusing, and awareness of emotions through body awareness, and some aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy to enhance and enrich her patients' experience. Mary Jean works with individuals on problems of everyday living; longstanding emotional issues which affect day-to-day living; trauma; physical, emotional, and sexual abuse; issues pertaining to self-esteem, self-image, and an individual’s overall sense of self; spirituality; and social anxiety and relationship issues. In addition, as a Contemporary Relational Psychoanalyst, Mary Jean also offers individuals, who can benefit from intensive psychotherapy, the opportunity to work deeply on basic beliefs of how they view themselves, others, and their world. Mary Jean is on the faculty of the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. She makes presentations to professional and lay audiences. She is also available for clinical supervision and case consultation.
Mary Jean graduated with honors from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work and is trained extensively in individual, couples, and group psychotherapy and in contemporary relational psychoanalysis. She has completed training at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, the Washington School of Psychiatry, and the Institute for Imago Relationship Therapy. She has worked in inpatient and outpatient psychiatric units at Dominion Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia; the former Northern Virginia Community Hospital, Arlington, Virginia; the Washington, D.C. Commission on Mental Health Services with the seriously mentally ill; and with graduate and undergraduate students at the American University Center for Psychological and Learning Services. Prior to her social work career, Mary Jean raised four children and was a teacher of young children. She also served in leadership and advocacy roles in her community's public school system for 18 years.
