Mary Jean Kane is a licensed clinical social worker. She works with individual adults and older adolescents, couples, family members, and groups, and leads a
Depression Growth Group for men and women with depression and bipolar disorder. Mary Jean's style of therapy is interactive, using her areas of specialization in relational psychotherapies, including self-psychology and intersubjectivity. Mary Jean works with people on problems of everyday living, longstanding emotional issues which affect day-to-day living, issues of self-esteem and self-image, spirituality, and serious mental illness. Her approach combines psychodynamic psychotherapy (talk therapy) and experiential therapies, drawing on imagery, Gestault therapy, psychodrama, and Focusing, and she uses Imago Relationship therapy methods with couples and other family relationships. Mary Jean also presents workshops to professional and lay audiences on a variety of topics, including marriage relationships and Focusing, a mind-body approach
used to enhance emotional and spiritual awareness and
understanding.
Mary Jean graduated with honors from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work and has been training extensively in an advanced psychotherapy training program at The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in Washington, D.C. She has done inpatient and outpatient psychiatric work at Dominion Hospital in Falls
Church, Virginia; Northern Virginia Community Hospital; The Washington, D.C. Commission on Mental Health Services with the seriously mentally
ill; and with graduate and undergraduate students at The American University Center for Psychological and Learning Services.
Prior to her social work career, Mary Jean raised four children
and was a preschool teacher. She also served in leadership
and advocacy roles in her community's public school system for
18 years.
